More than 40 years of tinnitus expertise in Connecticut
Our Connecticut practice operates as the Auditory and Vestibular Institute of New England, founded by Dr. Natan Bauman. Dr. Bauman is both an engineer and an audiologist. He invented the receiver-in-thecanal hearing aid, now the most widely used hearing aid design in the world, and he founded the New England Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Clinic, which he ran from 1996 to 2021.
He also developed Cognitive Habituation Tinnitus Therapy, an approach he now teaches to clinicians internationally, and he founded the Tinnitus Practitioners Association, which treats tinnitus, hyperacusis, phonophobia, and misophonia. Alongside him, the team has more than 30 years of additional audiology experience on staff.
Care is available at three Connecticut offices: Hamden, Norwalk, and Branford. Every patient also has access to the national Treble Health® clinical team and our telehealth program.

Natan Bauman, MS, Eng., EdD, F-AAA
Founder and audiologist
Dr. Bauman has spent more than 40 years working across the full range of auditory conditions, as both an engineer and an audiologist. He invented the receiver-in-the-canal hearing aid, the most widely used hearing aid design in the world. He founded the New England Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Clinic and ran it from 1996 to 2021, developed Cognitive Habituation Tinnitus Therapy, which he now teaches internationally, and founded the Tinnitus Practitioners Association to treat tinnitus, hyperacusis, phonophobia, and misophonia. He holds a doctorate in audiology from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a master’s degree in electroacoustics from Wroclaw Polytechnic Institute in Poland. He sees patients in Hamden and Norwalk.
Janice Howard, MA, CCC-A
Audiologist
Janice brings over 30 years of audiology experience to the practice. She worked alongside Dr. Bauman at the Hearing Balance and Speech Center for more than three decades before joining AVI New England in March 2022. She’s known for taking the time to make sure every question gets answered, and she sees patients in Hamden.
Melissa Patrich, AuD
Audiologist
Dr. Patrich earned her doctorate in audiology from Rush University and her undergraduate degree in speech, language, and hearing sciences from Boston University, and she completed her clinical externship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Her work covers comprehensive hearing and tinnitus evaluations, hearing aid assessments and fittings, vestibular evaluations, and canalith repositioning for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. She’s focused on patient-centered care and on keeping current with hearing technology as it advances. She sees patients in Hamden.
