In this review, we will focus on hear.com’s Horizon hearing aid, running through such factors as fit, price, and accessibility so that you can determine whether they might be the right hearing aids for you. Then, we will compare hear.com’s telehealth services with Treble Health’s Hear From Home program.
Hear.com’s Remote Fitting Process
Before purchasing the Horizon hearing aid, you must first complete a remote hearing test through hear.com. The test typically lasts one hour and is offered free of charge. In order to complete the hearing test, hear.com mails you a tablet and video otoscope, which lets hear.com’s audiologists remotely check your ear canal for ear wax. The type of test that hear.com conducts is called an in situ (situational) hearing test which, while not perfect, offers good information on hearing thresholds that can then be used to program hearing aids.
Horizon Hearing Aid Review
While the Horizon hearing aid uses Signia’s hearing aid hardware, hear.com reports that the software inside the hearing aids have additional features developed with the input of their patients. Three different levels of technology are offered—entry level, mid level, and premium—costing $4,500 up to $6,500, which can be financed for $139 to $229 per month. All hearing aids sold through hear.com come with a three-year warranty. However, while partial payment via personal medical insurance is available, it is very limited, and hear.com’s hearing aids are generally expensive compared to other telehealth models.
Hear.com’s testing and fitting process is easy, however their hearing aids are ultimately too expensive for what they’re providing. In comparison, Treble Health’s telehealth model requires patients to complete an in-person hearing test at an audiology clinic, as we believe that this is the best way to guarantee satisfaction with remotely fitted hearing aids.
Telehealth Services
Hear.com, like some of its competitors, uses telehealth with primarily one device. This means that hear.com must utilize their local audiologist network to dispense hearing aids made by Phonak or Oticon, which are two of the most respected brands. At Treble Health, we are able to dispense multiple brands to our patients as part of our Hear From Home program, including the industry-leading Phonak Paradise. Like hear.com, we also work with Signia; however, we dispense Signia’s hearing aids at a much more reasonable price point, from $3,300 for the entry level model to $4,400 for the premium model. If telehealth is a route you’re looking to take, we believe that Treble Health’s Hear From Home program is the most comprehensive and affordable option available. Otherwise, you may wish to consider visiting a local audiology clinic for an in-person fitting, which is typically 50% more expensive than purchasing hearing aids via telehealth.
Hopefully, this article has helped you understand the options available to you via telehealth, as well as what factors to consider when purchasing hearing aids.
