As we continue to search for effective treatments for tinnitus and dig deeper into solving the problem at the root, it can feel like we’re left with even more questions than answers. The tinnitus community is no stranger to the rumor mill, with everything from fad diets to exaggerated success stories by well-oiled marketing machines.

Who can blame anyone for wanting to silence the ringing in their ears? There’s indeed no cure for tinnitus, and these phantom sounds can have very real, and often negative effects. People with tinnitus are encouraged to be open to trying different approaches until a full-fledged solution is found. That may even include experimental treatments, though rates of placebo are high with this condition.

Tinnitus 911 has popped up on our radar with its promises of an “all-natural” approach for treating tinnitus as an herbal supplement specially formulated for tinnitus patients. From a health and wellness perspective, herbal supplements are generally encouraged, but can they help tinnitus?

Can these ancient herbs silence the ringing in the ears? The experts at Treble Health wanted to explore this new product and see what the science has to say about Tinnitus 911.

What Is Tinnitus 911?

This is Tinnitus 911, a product sold online ranging between $50-$100 that claims to do the following:

  • Creates a wave of calm and can quiet the mind
  • Reduces noise sensitivity, and helps with migraines, dizziness, and nausea
  • Improves memory and focus
  • Increases thought processing and can restore cognitive health and function
  • Improves hearing and reduces ear ringing, buzzing, and clicking.

Tinnitus 911 is a type of herbal supplement formulated with hibiscus, hawthorn berry, olive oil extract, and other ingredients believed to be beneficial for people with tinnitus. It has thousands of reviews online, many of whom swear by it, but it’s always a good idea to see what independent sources have to say about products before making any purchasing decision.

What The Science Says

Tinnitus is a complex condition, so finding the cure isn’t as straightforward as we’d hope. Tinnitus research is decades behind other health conditions. But, with more awareness around the phantom sounds affecting millions of Americans, it’s only a matter of time before we get more answers and dedicated resources to study tinnitus.

In the past, tinnitus was thought to be a sign of hearing loss, but now we know the problem has more to do with abnormal signals in the brain, which can be caused by several known conditions. This does include hearing loss, but it also includes head/neck trauma, thyroid disorders, heart and blood vessel problems, tumors, as well as chronic conditions such as diabetes, lupus, and multiple sclerosis. It’s much easier to treat tinnitus when there’s a known medical condition since the protocol for treatment is the same treatment for the existing condition. So, if the condition calls for certain medications or even surgery this is a likely solution for the ringing in the ears as well. Unfortunately, this problem, or root cause isn’t always clear.

Supplements promote overall well-being and are encouraged when there’s a lack of certain nutrients in the body. These generally come from food, but it isn’t always easy to know what nutritional level of someone’s diet . Tinnitus 911 contains ingredients such as hibiscus, hawthorn berry, olive leaf extract, green extract, and niacin B3. These, according to the company’s website, are linked to managing changes in ear health, however there’s no indication of scientific studies to support their claim.

Magnesium may be useful as a sleep aid for mild cases of insomnia, where it’s been more difficult to fall or stay asleep, but more research is needed. In more severe cases, prescription medication and other medical interventions prove more useful. Experts agree that there’s currently no herbal or supplement cure for tinnitus.

Tinnitus 911 is not FDA-approved, and there’s little to no evidence that indicates the vitamins and other nutrients included can be used to treat tinnitus. While there are thousands of online reviews and testimonials to attest to the product, Tinnitus 911 should not be considered a bona fide treatment for tinnitus.

What The Experts Say

Treating tinnitus usually starts with a doctor’s visit, which is where most patients can rule out the possibility of an underlying condition. Treating tinnitus is usually easier when there’s an identifiable root cause. When there’s no clear cause for tinnitus, patients are usually referred to specialists such as audiologists and otolaryngologists (ENTs) for more comprehensive treatment plans.

Tinnitus 911, or any herbal supplements like it have not been scientifically proven to be effective treatments for tinnitus. It joins a list of other tinnitus treatments like ear drops, sprays, and oils that are unlikely to produce any real results. The most effective treatments available today include:

  • Sound therapy– Sound generation devices, masking devices, and other delivery options for sound therapy may be useful in helping someone with tinnitus get used to phantom sounds. Each case is different, so some patients might need sound therapy to mask tinnitus sound entirely, while others use it in the background to give their minds something familiar or comforting to focus on instead. Sound therapy is also used to provide sound enrichment as a lack or absence of sound can also trigger tinnitus symptoms.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy(CBT)– CBT or traditional talk therapy is used to address the psychological effects of tinnitus. Tinnitus can trigger strong emotional responses which can become overwhelming, eventually affecting one’s work, relationships, and quality of life. CBT equips tinnitus patients with the tools needed to process these overwhelming feelings.
  • Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT)– TRT is considered the gold standard of tinnitus treatment, combining tinnitus education with sound therapy and CBT. This is considered a more targeted approach, allowing patients to take charge of their treatment in a way that makes sense for their individual symptoms.
  • Hearing aids– Hearing loss can sometimes cause tinnitus symptoms. When this is the case, treating hearing loss usually has a positive effect on tinnitus. Many modern hearing aids even come with tinnitus features, delivering sound therapy discreetly directly to the eardrum, as opposed to a sound generator that may not be appropriate to use while at work or on the go.
  • Medication changes– There are certain medications that are linked to triggering or worsening tinnitus symptoms. Where possible, patients should stop taking the medication and seek alternatives under the guidance of a medical professional. A comprehensive health evaluation should be conducted to identify any potential tinnitus-causing medications
  • Stress reduction– High levels of stress have been linked to triggering tinnitus symptoms. Identifying key stressors through psychological intervention and working towards a stress-free life can have notable impacts on tinnitus. Adopting healthy lifestyle choices is also a great way to reduce stress and improve overall well-being. Improving your diet, exercising, and quitting smoking/drinking are all great places to start.

The path to overcoming chronic tinnitus isn’t linear. Some cases of tinnitus are easily treatable once the root cause is known. Other cases of tinnitus involve a trial-and-error process with tinnitus even disappearing and reappearing during and after treatment. Always seek professional medical advice before starting any tinnitus treatment.
